League champions and Cwpan Ceredigion holders St Dogmaels are in danger of ending the campaign with an empty trophy cabinet after a 1-0 Bay Cup semi-final defeat at the hands of a youthful New Quay outfit at Parcllyn.

Saints appeared sluggish for lengthy periods and afterwards manager Wayne Jones readily conceded that his charges had not played to their potential for several weeks.

"It's difficult to know why but we haven't performed to the standard we are capable of," he said.

Young Leighton James impressed up front for the Seasiders and it was the striker who got the all important goal before the interval. A mix-up in the Saints defence presented him with a clear-cut chance and he made no mistake.

During the second half Chris Thomas rattled the Quay crossbar and substitute Johnny James very nearly squared matters with his first touch but his effort shaved an upright.

The Seasiders defended intelligently with l6-year-old Carl Bourne playing his first full game and Gareth Evans outstanding in front of confident goalkeeper Damien Thomas.

Quay meet the winners of tomorrow's semi-final clash between Aberaeron and Lampeter Town in the final at Ffostrasol this Saturday. Lampeter reached the last four with a 4-2 win over Pencader of Division Two.
