Relationship turned sour

A builder in an on-off relationship with a woman for five years took a dim view when one of his partner's neighbours gave him information about the woman.

As a result of what he was told Dominic Andre Roberts sought out a man called Ian, and when he failed to locate him he went to his partner's home on the Maesglas housing estate - the relationship was at that stage having an off period - and assaulted her, a court was told.

Roberts aged 38, of Y Gorlan, Napier Street, Cardigan, pleaded guilty to assaulting June Louise Davies by beating on January 19.

He initially denied causing criminal damage to a door at her home but changed his plea to guilty when prosecutor Vaughan Pritchard Jones said children would be called to give evidence.

Mr. Jones said that on the night of Friday, January 18 June Davies received ten text messages from Roberts saying he was going to give Ian a hiding.

At around 2am the following morning Roberts let himself into the house, went into the bedroom and called Ms Davies "slag, slut, bitch."

He put his hand around her neck with the quilt between his hand and her skin and she became frightened because her daughter was in bed with her, said Mr. Jones.

He went on to say that Roberts squeezed her neck harder and when he became distracted she hit him three times to the face.

The prosecutor added that Roberts slapped her hard across the face which really hurt and "knocked her for six."

He then left the house punching and causing five holes in a wooden door on his way out.

Mr. Taylor said: "Things were boiling up inside him and he was very angry. He was seeking out Ian and unfortunately June took the brunt of it," he said.

Roberts was given a conditional discharge for six months, ordered to pay £50 compensation to Ms Davies and £60 court costs.

The bench made a Derogatory Assertion Order prohibiting the publication of assertions by the defence that were derogatory to the injured party.

A further charge against Roberts of common assault on a youth, to which he pleaded not guilty, was adjourned for trial on May 23 and he was given unconditional bail.
