Magpies shot down in final
League Cup action
League Cup action

Cardigan Town 0 New Quay 1 (after extra time) Costcutter League Cup Final A penalty in the first period of extra time gave the Seasiders their first major trophy and shot down the full-of-fight Magpies at Aberaeron yesterday.

In a wind-affected final that never reached any heights the result could have gone either way with both sides having chances to win in normal time.

With the wind at their backs during the opening 45minutes Town went close with two headers by player/manager Justin Evans and were also denied by goalkeeper Damian Thomas. In front of him Craig Richardson was immense throughout, the teenager showing once again that he has the potential to grace higher pastures.

At the other end Chris Atkinson and Bryn Evans were dangerous for Quay with the latter firing straight at Steve Smith when well placed.

Town defender Chris Truslove made a last ditch tackle to save the day as Charlie Dent closed in on goal, Smith kept out a Jamie Thompson effort and skipper Alun Williams got in a challenge on Bryn Evans in the nick of time.

It was Quay who dominated during the second period and should have taken the lead through Dent, but he fired over the crossbar while Atkinson fluffed two chances.

Cardigan went close through Gary Lawrence but the Magpies found difficulty making an impression on the Quay defence with Richardson a tower of strength.

Bryn Evans could have won it for the Seasiders near the end but the vastly-experienced Seamus Doherty made a superb saving tackle to deny the striker.

In the first period of extra time Quay substitute Lee Perkins crossed accurately to Atkinson but the front-runner headed over the crossbar.

As the Seasiders continued to push forward Steve Harper, Truslove, Justin Evans, Doherty and skipper Williams were all heroes for Town.

Just before the end of the first period Charlie Dent was put through but was upended by Doherty and referee Wyn Roberts had no hesitation in awarding a penalty. Bryn Evans coolly slotted the spot kick past Smith to put his side ahead.

With nothing to lose during the second period and with wind advantage the Magpies pushed men forward but the Seasiders held out for the greatest moment in the club's history.
