Why not dredge the river?
Once more the boating season is upon us, and once more we have to negotiate the shallow channels and sand banks to get out to our destination and we ask ourselves Will the Teifi estuary river ever get dredged?", the answer is Not on my life!'
The Teifi river estuary, so it seems, is no longer in the hands of the local people, but in the hands of the CCW (Countryside Council for Wales). According to the CCW, their aims, supposedly are to Sustain natural beauty and to make sure that the environment and landscape of Wales are a source of natural and cultural riches as a foundation for economic and social activity' - www.ccw.gov.uk.
If this is true, how is it that the river has still not been dredged? The only possible answer is money, of course we are well aware that it would cost us tax payers' million of pounds, but would this not be a very worthy cause if Cardigan, St Dogmaels and the surrounding area all benefitted from economic and social activity.
The river itself is a major factor of local life and has the potential to be a major lifeline for the town, its inhabitants and businesses.
We all need to make an effort to fight to save our diminishing community not hinder or quash it.

Maybe costs could be reduced by selling the dredged sand as was once the practice. Either that or it could be sculpted into an art project instead of the much maligned balls.

Going by the stories in the Tivyside, local people want a new hospital, a roundabout at Tesco, the swimming pool to stay open and the river dredged. What do they get? They get Architects Balls and Cobbles.
