Plaid double in Cardigan
 |
| New Plaid county councillors Catrin Miles and John Adams-Lewis |
PLAID Cymru may have scored two major upsets in Cardigan in the county elections by unseating two Independent councillors of long standing - but the party failed in its bid to win overall control of Ceredigion.
Plaid has 19 seats on the new council, compared to 16 last time; the Independents have 11 (16 last time); the Liberal Democrats won 10 seats (nine); Labour retained its one seat and there is one other'.
Two Independent members of the last Cabinet lost their seats - Mair Morris, Cardigan, who held the social services portfolio; and Emlyn Thomas, Aberaeron, who was responsible for education. Chairman of the council Fred Williams (Lib-Dem) was also beaten, as was Penri James, who is Plaid Cymru's prospective parliamentary candidate.
Results for all wards in south Ceredigion:

Aberporth: Gethin James (Ind) 610; Mark Mainwaring (Con) 251.

How ironic that Cllr John Adams-Lewis should have won a seat on the County Council on the back, to a large extent, of his campaign against the Bath House Development, when, during his last term of office as a County Councillor, he was party to, and agreed, the decision to allocate the Bath House site for mixed (including retail) and community use; precisely the use to which the developers now propose to put the site. Perhaps he would care to enlighten the rest of us as to how he has can execute such intellectual gymnastics, to such electoral advantage, and retain any shred of credibility?

Ironic indeed. And this is the man who has consistently shouted from the rooftops about how the town's people were not consulted about the location of the new hospital on the Bathhouse site despite clear documented evidence to the contrary. Wouldn't it be ironic if his major political legacy was to leave Cardigan WITHOUT a hospital.
