Title dedicated to Martyn
Maesglas Football Club has dedicated the Costcutter Ceredigion League championship won by the Cardigan-based Blues this month to the memory of former player/manager Martyn Rotie who died at the weekend.
The hugely popular former midfielder finally lost his long battle with cancer and died peacefully at his Maesyrhaf home in Cardigan on Saturday evening aged 52.
He initiated the successful run of the Maesglas side of the 1980's when the Blues won their first trophy the Cardiganshire League Cup at Aberaeron in April 1982.
One of the most gifted players on the local circuit during his era he was also a superb man motivator and truly inspirational on and off the pitch.
One of his proudest moments came at New Quay many years ago when he represented the Cardiganshire League against a celebrity side that included the late and great John Charles.
As tributes poured in for him this week Maesglas chairman Mark Lewis said: "I was fortunate to play a few games with Martyn.
"People like him don't come along that often. He was a special man and will be sorely missed," he said.
Current Blues manager Paul Jones, who led the team to the championship in the first season after promotion, said: "Martyn was a great ambassador not only for Maesglas but for the sport. He gave me my first game at New Quay as a youngster and I looked up to him ever since.
"He was a very modest and unassuming person but commanded the respect of all those around him. He will be missed by everyone. It is fitting that we dedicate the championship to him," he said.
Martyn leaves his wife Menna, daughters Catrin and Sharon, grandson Dafydd and brothers David and John to whom sympathy is extended.
The funeral is being held on Friday with a public service at St. Mary's church at 11am followed by a strictly private interment in the town cemetery. Further details can be obtained from Colin Phillips, funeral director, Hyfrydle, Gwbert road, Cardigan (tel. 01239 621192).
