Under age drinking clampdown
NEARLY half the pubs and shops checked in a recent clampdown on under-age drinking were caught selling booze to under-18s.
Five out of 11 outlets checked in the Cardigan area sold alcohol to underage youngsters, local police revealed last week.
And a survey of pupils at Ysgol Uwchradd Aberteifi shows that more than one third of kids admit they tried booze before they were 10 years old.
Two test-purchase exercises have been carried out in recent weeks in the Cardigan policing area - which includes Llandysul and Aberporth.
Sgt Alison Rees told last week's meeting of PACT (Partners and Communities Together) that of the 11 pubs and off-licences tested, five were caught and dealt with by way of on-the-spot fines of £75.
Cllr Mair Morris said: "It's disturbing that so many places were selling to underage youngsters."
Sgt Rees said: "There will be more operations of this kind locally and if we find persistent offenders they will be dealt with under the licensing laws and could end up losing their licence."
The survey of school pupils shows that just under a third drink every weekend. Most say the drink is bought for them by their parents, or they take it from home. One third say it is bought for them by older friends.

The derisory £75 fine for selling alcohol to underage drinkers is hardly a deterrent, the fine should be at least £300 minimum, with a three strikes and you loose your licence policy.

I am a former native of Cardigan and this is a widespread problem, where i live now; the problem is huge but unfortunately here it is not seen as a problem. I believe that parents should be made responsible by way of a costly fine in order to make them think of becoming responsible parents and lanlords licenses be put up for review.

I'm in my mid-twenties and underage drinking in Cardigan has been an evident problem since I was 15. A £75 fine is a laughable counter-measure and it's very difficult to believe that law enforcement officers are still ignorant as to who the persistent offenders are.
